What is covered on a hypnobirthing course?

Our courses are balanced and evidence-based. Here are some of the main topics we cover:

  • The mind-body connection, our conscious and sub-conscious minds, how fear and tension affects our bodies in labour;

  • Our birthing body, what happens physiologically during labour and birth, what hormones are at play and how we can support them;

  • Hypnobirthing relaxation techniques and how to use them in your pregnancy and your labour;

  • The maternity system; how to get unique care that’s right for you as an individual, how to advocate for yourself and tools to help you make decisions;

  • Medical interventions and options that are frequently offered, what they involve, and how you can use hypnobirthing techniques in a wide range of birthing scenarios;

  • How to prepare your body in the weeks leading up to labour and what choices you have;

  • The role of your birth partner and how they can be an enormous support for you in labour;

  • The three stages of labour, what to expect at each stage, and what tools you can use at each stage for support;

  • What to expect after your baby is born - the golden hour, optimal cord cutting, skin-to-skin, Vitamin K injection;

  • Support in writing your birth preferences.

FAQ’s

  • If you’re having a baby, then yes! One thing my clients repeatedly say to me Is ‘all women giving birth should know this’ and I wholeheartedly agree. Knowledge is power, no matter what kind of birth you’re planning for.

  • This absolutely comes down to personal preference and circumstance. The majority of my clients choose to begin a course between 24 and 28 weeks and this allows plenty of time to put the tools into practice, but it really is useful and valuable at any time.

  • No, this is a common misconception. Hypnobirthing is for all births! Feeling calm, confident, and equipped with knowledge is beneficial in any scenario.

  • You can use hypnobirthing throughout your entire pregnancy, your entire labour from the very first contraction until your baby is in your arms, and after your baby is born too. The relaxation techniques can be so beneficial postpartum too, when you may be dealing with feeding struggles, hormone changes and lack of sleep.

  • The more you can weave hypnobirthing into your daily life, the more you will benefit when it comes to giving birth. This shouldn't take up much of your time or feel like a chore, but small habits like listening to an audio before bed, looking at your affirmation cards in the morning, or reading positive birth stories can stack up and have a big impact.

  • There are no rules and everyone's situation is different, but your birth partner is certainly always welcome and encouraged to attend with you. The role of a birth partner is an important one and people are surprised with how much practical support birth partners can give and how much of an impact they have in both pregnancy and birth.

  • If you're living in Devon, it's entirely up to you if you'd rather meet in person or online. If you're further away, we can complete the whole course via zoom and I can send the materials to you. I've taught clients as far as the UAE, so distance and time zones are not a problem at all.
